Wouldn't it be wonderful to use natural anti-inflammatory neutraceuticals that have no adverse side effects to replace toxic anti-inflammatory pharmaceutical drugs?
What if you could lower the doses you are currently taking of possibly dangerous and harmful medications by adding a natural product that’s been used for centuries in traditional medicine, such as celery seed, used in India, or green-lipped mussel oil, used in New Zealand, or emu oil from Australia?
M.W. Whitehouse and D.E. Butters from the Department of Medicine, University of Queensland, Australia, looked at the effects of using green-lipped mussel derivatives together with pharmaceuticals such as NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs) and steroids. They wanted to find out if it was possible to lower the toxic doses of these pharmaceuticals customarily prescribed, while at the same time achieving better results.
Their findings were published in Inflammopharmacology in 2003 under the title "Combination anti-inflammatory therapy: synergism in rats of NSAIDs/corticosteroids with some herbal/animal products". You can download the complete study here if you are interested and are scientifically minded. Definitely not easy reading. We’ll try to explain this study below in as simple language as possible.
This study begins by stating that complementary or alternative medicines are the subject of considerable reappraisal by the scientific community. Now that's good news. Considering alternative medicine's long history and largely positive track record, we have a lot to benefit from such studies.
When you compare many complementary and alternative practices (sometimes referred to as Traditional Medicine) with modern pharmaceuticals, it's easy to see that many traditional medical practices have advantages both in effectiveness and in an almost total lack of negative side effects.
The authors of this paper show that
extracts from Indian celery seed and the New Zealand green-lipped mussel are powerful nutraceuticals that (i) amplify the potency of salicylates [aspirin] and prednisone [synthetic corticosteroid drug] for treating pre-established chronic inflammation (arthritis, fibrosis) and (ii) reduce the steroid's gastrotoxic [poisonous to the stomach] and lymphopenic [causing a decrease in the number of lymphocytes in the blood] side effects.
Although lowering levels of pharmaceuticals used is truly wonderful, perhaps the best solution would be to eliminate their use altogether by using more concentrated therapeutic doses of natural anti-inflammatory substances to produce the desired effects without any of the pharmaceuticals’ toxic and sometimes lethal side effects.**
There are some truly potent natural anti-inflammatory nutraceuticals available today that one can try without running the risk of suffering life-threatening consequences like the ones Vioxx users risked.
In sworn testimony before the United States Senate on November 18, 2004, Dr. David Graham depicted the number of deaths caused by Vioxx as
…the rough equivalent of 500 to 900 aircraft [each containing from 150 to 200 passengers] dropping from the sky. This translates to 2 - 4 [airline crashes] every week, week in and week out, for the past 5 years.
There are strong reasons to look to natural traditional medicinal practices from various cultures. One advantage of trying these approaches is that there isn't the need to inflict pain and suffering on animals and then inflict suffering and death on humans as the testing passes from animals to humans. The “testing” has already been done, in the sense that the traditional remedies have been used for centuries.
Whitehouse and his associates declare at the end of their study that
there are natural products/nutraceuticals which might also be considered steroid-sparing, either as (i) amplifiers of potency (i.e., diminishing steroid dosage required) or (ii) protectants from some of the notorious side effects of steroids, e.g., GI ulcers [gastro intestinal ulcers], lymphoid involution [compromising of the immune system's most powerful cells] and perhaps osteoporosis.
They go on to state that the "steroid-sparing agents", that is, these natural anti-inflammatory products coming from traditional medical systems, can generally be
regarded as safe (GRAS), being derived from (a) long traditional usage in non-Western systems of medicine and (b) regular foodstuffs in the same and other cultures.
GRAS refers to something the FDA labels as being "generally recognized as safe". You can't trust something just because the FDA gives it the GRAS rating, but you can be pretty sure that if something has been used for centuries by native populations without apparent side effects, there is a good chance that at least it won't kill you and at best it might help significantly!
We can actively look for alternatives to NSAIDs and steroids. Don't become another victim of the pharmaceutical companies' testing programs on humans.
Whitehouse and Butters’ research clearly shows that these animal-based oils, green-lipped mussel oil and emu oil, have the power not only to increase the potency of pharmaceutical drugs, but also to eliminate in some cases their negative side effects! Natural anti-inflammatory therapies do exist. Ask for them.
You can take this study to your doctor and ask him to see if he can give you lower doses of your NSAIDs or steroids, together with these nutraceuticals, or…
You can find powerful, concentrated, natural anti-inflammatory supplements that can ease inflammation and its pain and might even make using any NSAIDs or steroids unnecessary.** They may work for you.

We will be posting reviews of a very promising supplement that include green-lipped mussel oil as well as a powerful natural anti-oxidant, grapeseed extract.
